What is an Asphalt Roof?
An asphalt roof is a type of roofing system consisting of asphalt shingles and other roofing components, such as roof decking, flashing, and vents. Asphalt shingles are made of asphalt, fiberglass, and tar granules on top of a felt, fiberglass, or polyester mat.
Benefits of Asphalt Roofing
Known for durability and versatility, asphalt roofs are among the most popular roofing options in the industry. As an affordable option, asphalt offers a wide variety of colors and styles, so homeowners can easily find the perfect match for their taste, budget, and architectural needs.
Although readily available in materials and colors, asphalt roofs can be difficult to match during repairs if that specific shingle is discontinued. Your Oaks project estimator will help color match and find the shingles previously used, or they will find a near-perfect match if discontinued.
It’s also important to note that most asphalt roofs require yearly maintenance, such as a visual inspection, roof and gutter cleaning, and flashing inspection.
Types of Asphalt Roofing
Asphalt roofs are available in three types of shingles: 3-tab, architectural, and luxury.
Learn more about each one and their pros and cons to understand their differences. When you schedule an estimate, your project estimator can help you decide which is the best option for your home.
3-Tab Shingles
Also known as strip shingles, 3-tab shingles are the most basic type of asphalt shingle. Made from one layer of asphalt, they have a flat, one-dimensional appearance.
Pros
- Variety of colors to choose from
- Easy to repair, replace, and install
- Most cost-effective roofing material available
Cons
- Thinner than other types of asphalt shingles, lowering durability and longevity
- Not as weather-resistant as other roofing materials, especially in high-wind
- Only last an average of 15 to 25 years
Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles, also called laminate or dimensional shingles, are the most commonly used type of asphalt shingle. They are made from two or more layers of asphalt and offer a multi-dimensional appearance.
Pros
- Thicker than 3-tab shingles, providing higher durability and longer lifespan
- Can last up to 25+ years
- More weather-resistant than 3-tab shingles in harsh weather
Cons
- More expensive than 3-tab shingles
- Nearly double in weight than 3-tab shingles, so may require roof reinforcement to prevent the home’s structure from sagging or cracking
- Can be susceptible to hail damage
Luxury Shingles
Also called special, performance, or impact-resistant shingles, luxury shingles are the highest-quality asphalt roofing materials. Designed to look like slate, they offer a premium aesthetic without the cost of real slate installation. In addition, these shingles can be modified for specific benefits, like wind or hail resistance.
Pros
- More dimensionality and color options than 3-tab and architectural
- Provide maximum durability
- Longest lifespan of asphalt (lasting up to 50 years with proper maintenance)
Cons
- Pricier than 3-tab and architectural shingles
- Often the heaviest in weight of all asphalt shingles, it may require even more roof reinforcement to prevent the home’s structure from sagging or cracking

Common Questions About Asphalt Roofing
Want to know more about asphalt roofing repair, replacement, and installation?
Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.
How long does an asphalt roof last?
Several factors, including quality, environmental conditions, maintenance, and the type of asphalt shingle used, come into play when estimating the life of an asphalt roof.
Below is the average lifespan of different asphalt shingles:
- 3-Tab: 15-25 years
- Architectural: 30-50 years
- Luxury: Up to 50 years
Are asphalt roofs flammable?
Despite being more fire-resistant than other roofing options, asphalt roofs can still catch fire in extreme circumstances, such as intense heat, direct flames, or prolonged exposure to embers. It also can depend on factors like the type of asphalt shingle installed and the underlying materials.
Can you clean an asphalt roof?
Yes, asphalt roofs can be cleaned. Whether your roof has moss, mold, algae, or other organic growth, it’s best to use gentle cleaning methods and avoid harsh chemicals. We recommend contacting a professional who can safely and efficiently assess and clean your roof.
Can you paint an asphalt roof?
Asphalt roofs cannot be painted. Not only could painting potentially void its warranty, but it can also damage your roof by trapping moisture under the shingles. This can cause rot, mold, and deterioration.
